We are a school located in the north of Portugal, in V.N. de Famalicão, which is a strategic point in
the centre of River Ave Valley (Vale do Ave). River Ave Valley was an extremely dynamic and
productive region and strongly industrialized. The activity sectors are mainly connected to industry ,
agriculture and services. However, due to a recession in the industry sector, mainly in textile and
clothing, some families are facing difficult problems because of the closing down of factories. In some
cases entire families are facing unemployment, and serious financial problems, which undoubtedly
affects some of our students. V. N. de Famalicão is a city near the metropolitan area of O’Porto, the
second most important Portuguese city, with a very young population. D. Sancho I Association of
School is a public institution that resulted from an aggregation of different schools. . It is a postelementary
and secondary public institution with about 1980 students , whose ages range from 12 to
18 years old, and 200 teachers. Besides providing general teaching, it also provides vocational
teaching in the areas of Secretarial Studies, Environmental and Rural Tourism, Automation and
Computers, Telecommunications, , among others. Therefore, it receives pupils from almost all
schools of the region. It is a school attended by a lot of students because it offers a wide range of
courses. The school, it was completely rebuilt. It has good equipment, specific classrooms for
information technologies, physics, chemistry and biology, as well as other rooms and spaces for
leisure and activities. It has a canteen, a bar and a highly attended library. Despite all the teaching
activities, there are also several clubs working as well as the school newspaper and school sports.
The team involved in the project has a big experience in these kinds of projects because we’ve been
working with several European projects for many years and several of our students have been also
participating from teenagers to adults. All the projects have been successful due to the hard work
and expertise of the team of different areas that involve fields such as ICT, foreign languages,
psychologists, physical education, etc. This is our first project about cultural heritage. The staff
involved in the project is experienced and able to share their knowledge and expertise with the other
teachers so that all can learn from one another., as these examples show: Maria Helena PEREIRA
(vice-principal and teacher): Teacher in the area of History and Social Sciences. She has developed
several projects in the area of history, educational investigation and integration of disadvantaged
communities. Alexandra Lopes (foreign languages department coordinator and teacher): English and
German teacher since 1993. She was a teacher supervisor for 10 years in collaboration with
University of Minho (Braga, Portugal). Since 1999 she has coordinated and participated in several
European projects.
